The event was established in 1858, and it was originally contested over 3,200 metres. It was founded by Edouard Bénazet (1801–1867), a French businessman who was the manager of the Casino Baden-Baden. The inaugural running was part of a three-day festival to mark the opening of Iffezheim Racecourse.
The race's distance was cut to 2,800 metres in 1887. It was known as the Jubiläums-Preis from 1893 to 1895, and its length was shortened to 2,200 metres in 1894. The present distance, 2,400 metres, was set in 1898.
The Grosser Preis von Baden was staged at Hoppegarten from 1942 to 1944. For the following three years it was not contested, and for two years after that it was titled the Grosser Preis von Iffezheim.
The European race-grading system started to include German events in 1972, and the Grosser Preis von Baden was classed at the highest level, Group 1. The 1974 edition was split into two separate divisions.
